A lull

Things have been quiet on the SkillCycle front for some time now. But I haven't given up on the idea. I'm planning big things for next year. December is always a bitter-sweet time of year for me. Trying to avoid thinking about the regrets of the year past; instead turning them into plans for the future. Feeling like a fresh start can be made with a new year.

I have some ideas for things I'd like to do in the New Year but I'd love to hear from you about what you might like to be involved in.

  1. It might seem like a lull but skills go on in the background.... I saved some expiring citrus from going to waste by making two big jars of marmalade using the skills I learnt from skill cycle.
New skills: I would love to do a composting workshop. Ours always seems too slimy, too dry, or breeding cockroaches....
Sourdough bread would be useful too as I think it works better for non-wheat flours. I'd like to be able to make my own sourdough bread or rolls using oat flour.

  2. Thanks Lucy, beautiful post.
I completely agree with Kerry that skills keep cycling too :)

Compost skills would be great (I think we've basically been fortunate with ours, so I probably would not have much wisdom to offer but am keen to learn more)

Sewing bees are always appreciated, somehow sewing is something I find hard to get started on my own, but love whenever I'm together with others.

Anything practical with bikes or other transport would be great.

And just for fun - perhaps some origami for making invitations / mobiles/ notes ? (I have a very small set of skills specific to cranes and flexagons, hoping to learn more over the coming year)

  3. Great thoughts girls! I'm always inspired by you two. Lets make it happen in the new year. I think I need to get back to basics and remind myself that small is beautiful.

  4. Enjoy your dreaming about next year Lucy.

For me - next year is going to be largely about reducing debt - we've realised we've pushed ourselves in pursuit of our dream and need to reduce our debt so that we're not so vulnerable.

So I'm starting to accept that next year may not be all that fun :-(

  5. Hi all,
I really love that sentiment, that skills keep cycling. They really do. I'm only going to be around Brisbane for less than another 4 months so in the scheme of things happening, it doesn't give much time for me! I do agree that small is beautiful, Lucy. I have been spending some time one-on-one with a friend, teaching her to crochet. Sometimes the small scale enables some really lovely quality time and solid learning of skills. There are so many things I'd like to master or learn, I'm trying to set myself small goals with some of those things.
Hope you are all going well. Maybe in this space (skill cycle blog) we could share some of the things we've been learning ourselves and what resources we are utilising for the learning?
    Mel
